My husband and I do most of our hiking in and around Yosemite National Park. We would like to do some hiking in Europe but would probably feel more comfortable with someone more familiar with the surroundings.

Do you know of any hiking services that lead hikers along the Alta Via 1 trail?

    1. Shari, The Dolomites are an easy range to hike in thanks to a great trail system, but there are a lot of trail options, some much better than others – even on the AV 1 and 2. The biggest issue in the Dolomites for visitors are the logistics of hut reservations and getting to and from trailheads. I highly recommend you contact Holimites.com – they are a tour service specializing in mountain sport activities for Int’l visitors – and they are close friends.

My husband and I are very experienced backpackers and are looking for a 3-day, 2-night hike in the Dolomites. This will be a side trip from Venice, as part of a 2 week tour of Northern Italy in general. Our concern is 1) we will be hiking in Dolomites June 1 -3, and huts will not be open, and 2) we feel overwhelmed when searching internet for an appropriate hike. We were thinking maybe a 25ish mile loop? Since the huts are not open, are we allowed to camp in our tent? Can you recommend a loop? Thanks for any direction you can provide!

    1. This is a tricky one given the time of year. You’re best bet is to find a trail that will pass you through a village. Do you have a car? This is pretty key to getting to a good starting point. And you are right, the options are overwhelming. The Val Badia, Val Gardena, Val di Funes region seems it could be a good network. As always, we refer people to Holimites as they specialize in these things – and they can assist in any logistics. The good news is that there is little to no snow this year – so trails should be in good shape.

My two friends and I are going to be in the dolomite area June 1-3 2011 and would like to know if you know any 20-25 mile routes that would be good to do and if any refugees are open . If not are there any good day hikes from close town ( we will have no car, maybe ride if lucky.). I hear tent camping is not allowed and I assume that means sleeping under the stars also? Any suggestions would be appreciated .

Hi, we will be in the Dolomites in June 2011, to do road cycling and we would like know what are the best Dolomites cycling routes to do ?

    Thanks in advance

    1. Hi Yves, That is a big question as I do not know where you will be.
But the classics are the Sellaronda’s passes, also the Giau, the Erbe, Duran, San Pelligrino, Tre Croci, Furca and of course the Falzarego.
Best to base yourself in or around Alta Badia for all of these.

    Hi,

I am going to the dolomites by myself on the middle of july for some hiking and mtb . i was wondering in which city i should stay (i have a car), any advice?

Thanks a lot for all the info on the website!

    Regards

    Joao

    1. I would recommend either the Alta Badia towns or Cortina. Both have great access.

    Thanks!

I am planning to visit the Dolomites June 17-24 with 4 other adults. We will have a car and would like to do day hikes. In Chamonix we used lifts to access amazing hikes. Any suggestions for the Dolomites? Are lifts open at that time? If not, any area recommended for day hikes?
    Thank you.

    1. Thanks for checking in. We refer everyone seeking info to our partners at http://Holimites.com they specialize in exactly this sort of planning.

Hello, I’m staying in plan de Gralba 3rd week of March. I want to give two of my friends a big present. I want to do some freeriding on the Sella Gruppe. Maybe dropped by helicopter? Which office I can go to arrange that and arrange a guide?

I hope you can give a answer. Thank you!

    1. Hi Bas, We don’t have anything to do with heli-skiing in the Dolomites, It isn’t looked upon so kindly… For general backcountry guiding you can just contact the Tourism office in Val Gardena, or also our friends at ProGuide or Alberto De Giuli.
