[...] Dolomites sport: There are some good suggestions on how to shorten and cut the route if you don’t have 10+ days for the full Alta Via 1. Don’t be put off by the 5 day running variant right at the top of the page. There are longer variants further down the page. [...]
Hi!
We are traveling to do TransAlp in late July. Are any of the trails on the route you mention here open to mtn bikes? Thanks! Nicola
Hi Nicola, Yes, the Alta Via 1 has a lot of rideable trails. There is some law here that says that trails have to be a certain width to ride, but trails change width… and like so many things in Italy, no one pays any attention to “laws”. But one section that is really fun and pretty is the whole Fanes area, from Rifugio Biella to Rifugio Lagazuoi. One thing to know about Dolomite mountain biking is that there isn’t so much singletrack, at least for long sections, it is a lot of dirt roads or huge trails. But… really pretty.
We will be there the 1st week of October, do you need to make advance reservations for the huts?
Most likely the huts will be closed the first week of October, it is typically the last week for many huts.
We will have 3 full days to spend hiking, going on the assumption that the Huts will be closed the by the 1st week in October, what town would you recommend making our base to day hike out of? And do you have recommendations on the best/scenic hike/trails to do?
We are seasoned experienced hikers (from Colorado so we train at altitude), but I’m not a rock climber.
Thank you
My favorite area is the Alta Badia, and the best villages are San Cassiano, Corvara, La Villa and Badia.
For hiking it is endless, but certainly the Fanes area, Lagazuoi, and Sas dla Crusc.
Seems best to determine where you will stay and then it is easier to suggest hikes.
Check in with Holimites.com, they are our best friends and a tour service for active holidays.
wanting to walk the trail in June….when is the earliest one can solo walk the Alta Via trail ?
Flight via UK would best be into Innsbruck ?
Please advise.
Rgs, John
The huts open June 20 so this is technically when it all starts. Best to get reservations for all of them in advance to make sure they are actually going to be there. You can reserve through Holimites.com as getting huts to respond can be the trickiest part of the whole process.
Enjoy,
Dan
