Maybe, you should mention that in 2007, the same year you did the Maratona dles Dolomites another young American cyclist and future promise of US cycling did the Maratona on the short course (Sellaronda) and finished 4th overall:

    nice article.

i’d say that you should watch out for the german and dutch on descents. especially the latter: they tend to think they’re better than they are, and rocket down without a care in the world, or anyone else for that matter.

i’ve done the maratona 3 times, although the last was the only one where i attempted a good time. i rode with 2 regular bottles, and stopped for water on the second pass of the campalongo. i think i refilled one bottle before the giau, and then made sure to get a feed in on the top of the giau – as you suggested.

the great thing about the maratona ristori is how well stocked it is. the bad thing is when people block the way to them by holding on to their bikes while waiting/drinking/eating.

as far as gearing: i’ve done it in 39×25/34×25/34×27 – i was happy to have that 27. then again, i’m not 130lb.

one last thing -after passing it for 2 years in a row, and being curious, i made a point of visiting the Museum of the Cinque Torri. Well worth the visit.

Oh… one last thing. Remember that when you hit the top of the Falzarego, you still have that nasty little climb up the Valparola!

If I do not get ticket for the Maratona via the lottery, would it be possible to purchase one from someone else who is unable to use his ticket? Is there a website where tickets are traded, or otherwise, how could I go about getting a ticket?

    1. Hi Roger,
Truthfully, I am not the guy to ask. You can check in with Holimites as they are the official tour operator for the Maratona and have complete packages with entry.

I’m curious if you ever got an answer to your question? I did not get a ticket via the lottery and am desperate to get in. I’m sure there will be some that got a ticket but will not ride.

      1. Hi Scott, Can you clarify what you are asking? To which question are you referring?

I did the long course of the Maratona for the first time this year 2010, I can honestly say that it was one of the most incredible and rewarding days of my life.
I’m with the person above who warns to remember the nasty little climb after the top of the Falzarego (the final climb) I found it very tough mentaly, having thought I’d already hit the top. My mate stopped and gave a ‘Benny Hill’ salute to the Umpa band, who cheered him and then ran along and pushed him the last 50 meters, some still playing their instruments. I may try that myself, along with your tips for the 2011 event.
